G. William Schweer is senior professor of evangelism, an honor conferred upon him in April 1996 in recognition of his retirement as the E. Hermond Westmoreland Professor of Evangelism at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary on July 31, 1996.

He has done additional study at Trinity Evangelical Seminary, San Francisco State University, Fuller Seminary and Oxford University.

A native of Independence, Mo., Dr. Schweer has been pastor of two Missouri Baptist churches, First Baptist Church of Union Star and Calvary Baptist Church of Independence.

In 1957, Dr. Schweer was appointed by the Southern Baptist Convention's Foreign Mission Board as a missionary to Indonesia. He served as a professor at the Baptist Seminary of Indonesia in Semarang, Java, until 1970 when he was elected president of the institution.

Dr. Schweer served two years in that capacity before returning to the United States to become pastor of First Baptist Church, Palatine, Ill. He held that position until he came to Golden Gate Seminary in 1975.

Dr. Schweer has written articles for numerous publications, including the Adult Teacher, Home Life and Open Windows magazines. In addition, he has written seminary extension study guides for evangelism, for mission study and a textbook for seminary evangelism classes entitled Personal Evangelism for Today published by Broadman. More recently, Dr. Schweer contributed a chapter for a new missions textbook and two chapters for feitschrifts honoring outstanding men in Baptist life.
